Prison Tails Dog Training Program

Prison T
frame
This original logo was designed for Prison Tails by Anthony Brown, original member.

Prison Tails is the award winning program that trains men and dogs to be better members of society.

Dogs and offenders are partnered 24 hours a day. Dogs learn basic obedience through repetition and positive reinforcement. Offenders learn the values that many of us take for granted.

Elements of this rehabilitative program include required reading, classroom instruction and discussion, writing and report presentation, as well as visiting speakers and experts.

Volunteers from MUM visit Westville Correctional Facility's (WCF) medium security complex weekly for training sessions. And now we have a full time staff member dedicated to overseeing the program on-site.

Through special arrangements with the AKC, dogs receive Canine Good Citizen certification. Offenders also receive recognition from AKC, Mixed Up Mutts and Westville.

In 2005, Prison Tails was awarded "Program Of The Year" by the Indiana Department of Corrections and the first ever Outstanding Program Award from the American Kennel Club's Canine Good Citizen Program.

ONCE OUR DOGS RECEIVE THEIR 8 WEEKS OF TRAINING, THEY ARE THEN READY TO BE "PAROLED".  THEIR ADOPTION FEE IS $250 WHICH INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING:

All adoptions, drop-offs, pick ups, & meet~n~greets of all the Prison Tails or Express Train dogs are BY APPOINTMENT ONLY and they take place in the parking lot of Westville Correctional Facility.  Unless otherwise noted, we meet in the north parking lot near the white guard shack by the fence.  (Please dress for the weather as we will remain outside)  Normally, a dog handler will be on hand with the Program Director to help with the dogs &/or to demonstrate the dogs' training.

PLEASE DO NOT COME TO THE PRISON WITHOUT AN APPOINTMENT AS YOU WILL BE TURNED AWAY!   ALL PAYMENTS AND CONTACT REGARDING THE DOGS MUST BE MADE TO MIXED UP MUTTS, INC AT THEIR ADDRESS AND PHONE #.  PLEASE DO NOT CONTACT WESTVILLE CORRECTIONAL FACILITY AS THEY WILL NOT BE ABLE TO HELP YOU.  DOING SO COULD RESULT IN DENIAL OF ADOPTION APPLICATION OR REFUSAL OF DOGS INTO ANY OF OUR PROGRAMS.
